By: Hailey Farrow, Marketing Manager on behalf of CostQuest Associates.

This week CostQuest’s CEO, Jim Stegeman, was interviewed by Jonathon Chambers for the Co-Ops Connect FYI Newsletter by Conexon.

For this week’s edition of the Co-Ops Connect FYI Newsletter, Jim and Jonathon uncover:

  • Why accuracy in broadband mapping matters
  • Estimates of how many locations in the U.S. that are lacking broadband access
  • How to prepare availability data for the FCC’s Challenge Process to confirm the validity of the service being reported into the Broadband Data Collection at each location

Key notes:

It’s important to keep in mind the count of unserved and underserved locations lacking broadband is what will determine how much funding from the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment program is allocated to each of the States on top of their base $100M grant.

CostQuest estimates that there could be as many as 23M to 25M locations in the U.S. that are lacking broadband access. Other data sources indicate about 9 million locations lack access.

“I’d encourage everyone to watch this brief interview with Jim, particularly the final five minutes or so. It will give you a sense of the enormity of the task in mapping the country.”
