Overview

WTA began operating on January 1, 2004, as Western Telecommunications Alliance after a merger of two regional associations representing rural telecommunications providers in the western United States. Those two associations had collectively represented the rural industry west of the Mississippi for over 105 years.

The goal of Western Telecommunications Alliance was to be the Voice of the West. Western Telecommunications Alliance quickly became a leading voice and respected national association representing the interests of rural telecommunications companies on Capitol Hill and at the FCC and other federal agencies. In 2013, WTA’s membership unanimously voted to expand its membership to companies east of the Mississippi. The WTA Board of Directors retained the iconic WTA swoosh logo but with the expansion to the east, rebranded the association as WTA – Advocates for Rural Broadband. Today, WTA proudly represents more than 360 rural telecommunications companies throughout the United States and over 85 industry vendors.
