CQA was a sponsor for the 12th Annual TFI Communications Technology & Asset Valuation Conference in Austin, TX, January 26-27, 2017.
This year's topics ranged from discussions on New Transformative Technologies to Communication Technology applications like the expansion of personal assistant and home security devices for the Internet of Things. There were also talks on the impact post millennials have on communications and on recycling and the reuse of IT and communications equipment.
The keynote speaker for the conference was Iain Gillot, President and Founder of iGillottResearch, Inc. His Wireless Keynote Speech-From Here to 5G, was well received. Mr. Gillot gave a great update of the development of 5G wireless technology. Everyone today is interested in 5G, the next big development in wireless technology. He indicated that rather than going from 4G to 5G overnight, it would happen with a phase-in of equipment from 2016 to 2020. The phase in would be in steps as the wireless technology evolved from 4G to 5G. There are a number of things that need to be addressed before the transition:
- Upgrading antennas.
- Adding additional fiber to towers.
- Upgrading electronics for both equipment and handsets.
He indicated the installation of 5G will happen in the period of 2021—2026. The question is will there be the additional demand for service to support the additional cost for the installation of 5G. Since the actual installation of 5G technology is several years off, there is still time for new application and uses to be developed to support the additional cost of 5G. Only time will tell how the next stage of wireless technology develops.
